Straw Bale Home Plans

Home Type 1 ($500)

This series of one and one half storey two bedroom light frame homes range in size from 2518 square feet to 3036 square feet (building code 1761 square feet to 2153 square feet usable). They feature structural pre-build plans, balloon construction, and a free standing post and beam second floor loft. This loft ranges from 508 to 614 square feet usable and can be used as extra bedroom space, office/studio space, play space for the kids, or as storage. This structural pre-build free standing loft method of construction allows you to raise the roof and stack and plaster the bales to enclose the building early in the season. This gives you the freedom to work on the interior of the building without having to worry about the onset of winter. The building can be heated and work can continue all year round. These plans can all be easily modified to make them a single storey (Type 1A).

Our drawing packages include fully dimensioned floor plans, four elevations, foundation plan, second floor deck framing plan (if applicable), building sections, typical wall sections, straw bale wall details, top plate details, window and door buck details.

Square footage is expressed as two numbers. The first is the building code square footage which is the outside length of the building multiplied by the outside width of the building. The second (in brackets) in the usable square footage which is the inside length of the building (or deck) multiplied by the inside width of the building (or deck). In most places local bylaws specify that the building permit fees are based on the outside dimensions of the building. It may be possible to negotiate a building permit based on the inside dimensions of the building or some compromise between the outside and inside dimensions.
